Kanchanjunga to Makalu via Lumba Sunba Pass

This section connects the Kanchenjunga Section with the Makalu Barun Section, and is also called the Lumbasumba Trek, as you have to cross the Lumbasumba pass (5159 m). This is unexplored, high altitude trekking and thus for the experienced. The terrain is harsh and trails are not always in a good condition. The crossing of the Lumbasumba pass of 5159 m can be quite hard when there is snow (which is most of the time). The remoteness, spectacular landscapes and amazing views of the Himalayas make this trek however an amazing and unforgettable experience.

Because of the differences in altitude, the scenery is incredibly varied; from agricultural fields, to beautiful lush forests to spectacular high altitude landscapes. Lucky trekkers can spot the endangered snow leopard, red panda, the vulnerable Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard or Assamese macaque.

The itinerary described below connects with the Upper GHT just before Olangchun Gola (3191 m), and goes westwards from there. It is possible to combine this trek with the trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5143 m). In this case, you go first north to Ghunsa and the Kanchenjunga Base Camp, then return to Ghunsa and go westwards from there. Day 01: Arrival in Nepal, Hotel transfer.

Day 02: Sightseeing touu and preparation for the trek.

Day 03: Flight Kathmandu to Badrapur and Drive to Birtamod.

Day 04: Drive Birtamod to Taplejung.

Day 05: Trek Taplejung (1820 m) to Mitlung (909 m) 5 hrs.

Day 06: Trek Mitlung (909 m) to Chiruwa (1250 m) 7 hrs.

Day 07: Trek Chiruwa (1250 m) to Gowatar (1805 m) 6 hrs.

Day 08: Trek Gowatar (1805 m) to Jongin (2640 m) 8 hrs.

Day 09: Trek Jongin (2640 m) to Olanchun Gola (3208 m) 3 hrs.

Day 10: Olangchung Gola (3208 m).

Day 11: Trek Olangchung Gola (3208 m) to Sanjung (4003 m) 6 hrs.

Day 12: Trek Sanjung (4003 m) to Pass Camp (4790 m) 5 hrs.

Day 13: Trek Pass Camp (4790 m) to Thudam (3571 m) via Lumbha Sambha Pass (5159 m) 8 hrs.

Day 14: Trek Thudam (3571 m) to Yak Kharka 1 (2756 m) 8 hrs.

Day 15: Trek Yak Kharka 1 (2756 m) to Chyamtang (2285 m) 5 hrs.

Day 16: Trek Chyamtang (2285 m) to Hatiya (1580 m) 8 hrs.

Day 17: Trek Hatiya (1580 m) to Ekuwa (1363 m) 7 hrs.

Day 18: Trek Ekuwa (1363 m) to Hedanga Gadi (1180 m) 4 hrs.

Day 19: Trek Hedanga Gadi (1180 m) to Dauj La / Deurali (2100 m) 7 hrs.

Day 20: Trek Dauj La / Deurali (2100 m) to Khandbari (1115 m) 5 hrs per Jeep.

Day 21: Drive to Tumglingtar 1 hr and flight Tumlingtar to Kathmandu.

Day 22: Free day in Kathmandu.

Day 23: Departure from Nepal.
